History,
Rancho Viejo is an incorporated town in Cameron County, nestled about 4 miles northwest of Brownsville in the Rio Grande Valley. Covering just over 2.3 sq mi, including waterways called “resacas,” the town blends resort-style living with a rich historical legacy
Historical Origins & Heritage
Spanish Colonial Roots (c. 1770–1781):
The area was first settled by José Salvador de la Garza and María Gertrudis de la Garza Falcón, founders of the Espíritu Santo and El Tanque ranches—later known collectively as El Rancho ViejoPotrero del Espíritu Santo Land Grant (1781):
King Charles III granted José Salvador approximately 260,000 acres—spanning from the Rio Grande to the Arroyo ColoradoHeirship & Sale (1848):
After the de la Garza descendants held the land until 1848, a portion was sold to James Grogan. Later, other parcels formed present-day Brownsville and Rancho Viejo
Resort & Residential Development
Mid-20th Century Transformation:
In 1968, Bill Bass launched the Rancho Viejo Resort & Country Club on about 280 acres. Ownership changed in the 1970s, culminating in the formation of Rancho Viejo, Inc. in 1978Incorporation (1980):
Residents voted to incorporate the town in 1980. It began as an upscale, retirement-focused enclave and quickly grew—largely fueled by seasonal residents known as “Winter Texans”
